Thimister-Clermont (March 2010) – Nomacorc, the world´s leading producer of alternative closures, is presenting its new NomaSense™ equipment for oxygen measurement at the INTERVITIS INTERFRUCTA. Last November, Nomacorc launched the NomaSense brand under which it markets oxygen management equipment and consulting services to the wine industry.
The NomaSense oxygen measurement system is highly accurate and portable and allows due to the use of oxo-luminescence technology for non-invasive analysis of both gaseous and dissolved oxygen in bottled wine. It provides rapid reading of total oxygen content in wine when measuring either high or trace amounts of oxygen and has applicability as a tool for controlling quality at every step in the winemaking process from crushing through post-bottling aging.
One of the biggest advantages of this measuring technology is the non invasive measuring of wine samples: "The measurement of oxygen in wine with the oxoluminisence technology is a big improvement, because the sample does not need to be destroyed. The advantage [compared to other measurement technologies] is definitely that samples can be evaluated easily and non invasive over a period of time", so Dr. Jung from Geisenheim.
According to Dr. Jung, this easy and reliable method for capturing of the oxygen content provides winemakers with the possibility to improve the quality of their wines: "The positive aspect, regarding wine quality, is that certain steps in the way of winemaking process, especially in bottling and the first phase of storage can be controlled more accurately. An unnecessary high amount of oxygen during the final phase of winemaking can be reduced due to the knowledge of the ration/proportions in wine and bottleneck."
Stephane Grappe, technical director of Wolfberger, is very satisfied with this measuring system: “We now use NomaSense at every stage of our winemaking process: during pressing, fermentation and on wines as they mature. Then we have a second use for it, which is more industrial, at the bottling stage and tomonitor wines which we call “tiré-bouché”: wines which are bottled and then we leave to mature for two to three years.”
NomaSense can also help the winemaker to find the right closure: “We choose our corking methods depending on the technical information that the NomaSense gives us. This information is more reliable than the system we used to use, as we can measure the wine in enclosed spaces. Plus, the fact that the system is non-invasive means that the data can be reproduced and monitored over time.”
The quality and technology of NomaSense is not only appreciated by winemakers: Nomacorc was recently awarded the prestigious SITEVI 2009 Gold Medal for Innovation for introducing the oxo-luminescence technology for measuring oxygen in winemaking. “This non-invasive process, which measures dissolved oxygen incredibly quickly at any stage in the wine-making process, struck us as incredibly effective,” said Jean-Bernard Montalescot, member of the panel of judges and technological advisor for SITEVI. “It will be of great use to oenologists responsible for making wine both in terms of assessing their processes and in terms of monitoring the quality of their wine.”
At the INTERVITIS INTERFRUCTA (March 24.-28. 2010) at booth A50, hall 5 representatives from Nomacorc will not only showcase the new NomaSense equipment but also the new closure Classic Limited, which has been developed exclusively for the German and Austrian market. Classic Limited offers perfect oxygen management for delicate white wines like Riesling, Rivaner and Grüner Veltiner.
